Author P. J. Bracegirdle begins an exciting new series for young readers with Fiendish Deeds. Bracegirdle's atmospheric tale of a young girl's fascination with her town's unusual history (and the rumored resident of a nearby swamp) deftly introduces the important contemporary environmental issue of wetlands protection.

Katherine Kellgren's masterful narration and a quote from Edgar Allan Poe set the tone in this creepy story with an environmental twist. Eleven-year-old Joy Wells is convinced that the setting of writer E.A. Peugeot's famous horror story, "The Bawl in the Bog," is the swamp of Spooking, the eerie town where she resides. Kellgren changes her tone and pitch to portray the many colorful characters, such as the exotic fortune-teller, Madame Portia. Kelgren's pacing works well to build suspense between Joy's fight to save the swamp from being turned into a water park and the mysterious Mr. Phipps's plans to destroy it. Listeners will look forward to the next installment in this grand adventure. L.A.C. (c) AudioFile 2009, Portland, Maine
